Recruitment

Selection Criteria

We apply the general selection criteria below at all stages of recruitment, with adjustment appropriate to particular stages as follows:

  • Prospective mini-pupils and pupils. Where it is unrealistic to expect a candidate already to have the requisite level of attainment, we look for potential.
  • Prospective lateral recruits. We also take account of the following: (a) whether the applicant has a successful, substantial and reasonably portable practice; (b) whether the applicant’s fields of practice, experience and seniority accord with our overall strategy for recruitment and business development.

General selection criteria

We aim to recruit individuals who possess, to a standard of excellence, the knowledge, skills and attributes required by the Professional Statement and necessary for a successful career at Twenty Essex. We attach particular importance to the following:

1
Legal ability, intelligence and analytical skills
  • A strong knowledge and understanding of relevant principles of law and procedure, coupled with excellent research skills.
  • Outstanding intelligence, in particular the ability to apply legal principles intelligently, also showing common sense, commercial awareness and good judgement.
  • The ability to analyse, in depth, complex facts and law, so as to identify the real issues, and devise appropriate, client-tailored, solutions or strategies.
2
Advocacy and communication skills
  • An exceptional ability to communicate (both in writing and orally) in a manner which is clear, precise, concise and well-structured.
  • Highly effective, eloquent and persuasive advocacy skills (both in writing and orally).
  • The ability to engage suitably and responsively with different audiences, and appropriately adapt styles and methods of communication.
3
Practice management and development

WE ARE RECRUITING – READ MORE >

As a set we have a keen eye on the future and our strategic direction and consequently apply considerable efforts to our recruitment at all levels.

We have invested in our employees and internal structures, and our commitment to teamwork facilitates the sharing of knowledge and ideas to benefit our barristers and enhance our relationships with clients. We have a strategic, goal-oriented approach to practice development, tailored to the practice of each individual and supported by our talented practice management and marketing teams.

We appreciate the commercial value and perspective of a prior career – we have former doctors, engineers, economists, scientists, bankers, academics and a number of former solicitors amongst us and we welcome applications from anyone who is interested in being part of, and contributing to, the strong professional reputation and continued success of Twenty Essex.

Diversity is very important to us and we use Rare’s Contextual Recruitment System to review applications for pupillage and mini-pupillage in the context of candidates’ socio-economic background because we are committed to ensuring that our recruitment processes are as inclusive as possible.

“Chambers does not revolve around a small number of people. It is inclusive for everyone working there.
It is a team, not a collection of stars who don’t connect.”
(a barrister member, Twenty Essex)
