As part of London International Shipping Week, we are co-hosting a mock LMAA maritime arbitration hearing together with the LMAA, Maritime London and 4 Pump Court.
Each year about 100 maritime arbitration hearings are held in London (with another 400 awards published on documents only). The pandemic has resulted in most arbitration hearings being conducted fully or semi-virtually online, for which the LMAA has published widely used protocols, now included in the LMAA Terms 2021.
Participants will be able to view a hearing involving a typical maritime case scenario, oral submissions by experienced barristers from leading chambers Twenty Essex and 4 Pump Court and a cross examination of remote witnesses giving evidence. There will also be an opportunity to ask the practitioners questions on the process on and offline. The event provides a real insight into the way in which London arbitrators and lawyers use technology to overcome the constraints of the pandemic and also to reduce cost and advance towards truly green arbitration. Ian Gaunt, Arbitrator and Past President of the LMAA will provide an introduction and commentary.
