Pupillage

Selection Criteria

We apply the general selection criteria below at all stages of recruitment, with adjustment appropriate to particular stages as follows:

  • Prospective mini-pupils and pupils. Where it is unrealistic to expect a candidate already to have the requisite level of attainment, we look for potential.
  • Prospective lateral recruits. We also take account of the following: (a) whether the applicant has a successful, substantial and reasonably portable practice; (b) whether the applicant’s fields of practice, experience and seniority accord with our overall strategy for recruitment and business development.

General selection criteria

We aim to recruit individuals who possess, to a standard of excellence, the knowledge, skills and attributes required by the Professional Statement and necessary for a successful career at Twenty Essex. We attach particular importance to the following:

1
Legal ability, intelligence and analytical skills
  • A strong knowledge and understanding of relevant principles of law and procedure, coupled with excellent research skills.
  • Outstanding intelligence, in particular the ability to apply legal principles intelligently, also showing common sense, commercial awareness and good judgement.
  • The ability to analyse, in depth, complex facts and law, so as to identify the real issues, and devise appropriate, client-tailored, solutions or strategies.
2
Advocacy and communication skills
  • An exceptional ability to communicate (both in writing and orally) in a manner which is clear, precise, concise and well-structured.
  • Highly effective, eloquent and persuasive advocacy skills (both in writing and orally).
  • The ability to engage suitably and responsively with different audiences, and appropriately adapt styles and methods of communication.
3
Practice management and development
  • A commitment to building a successful practice in Chambers, devoting time and effort as required to effective business development.
  • The ability to manage a practice effectively and deliver consistently excellent client service.
  • High levels of motivation, self-reliance, determination, and organisational skills.
4
Working with others
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team, taking a leadership role where appropriate.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills, and the ability to inspire confidence in other lawyers, clients and team members.
  • Respect for others, courtesy and sensitivity, regardless of background or circumstances.
5
Personal and professional standards and values
  • Honesty, integrity, independence and courage.
  • Compliance with professional standards and duties.
  • Active pursuit of equality and respect for diversity.

Pupillage at Twenty Essex offers the opportunity to train with barristers at the top of their profession in a highly successful, international and friendly set at the cutting edge of commercial and public international law.

The key features of pupillage at Twenty Essex:

  • We are a leading commercial and public international law set.
  • We seek outstanding applicants.
  • Diversity and inclusivity are very important to us. We were the first chambers to adopt Rare’s CSR.
  • High retention rate: nearly 90% of pupils over the last five years have joined chambers as tenants following pupillage, rising to 100% over the last three years.
  • A detailed, structured training programme. We do not just test: we teach.
  • Friendly and supportive atmosphere in chambers.
  • Generous award of £75,000, with drawdown and other benefits.
  • An emphasis on work/life balance for pupils.
  • No numbers limits: if you achieve tenancy standard you will be offered tenancy.

Pupillage is our chance to teach you to excel as a junior barrister. We are proud of our bespoke training programme and its fantastic results: in recent years over 80% of our pupils have been offered tenancy at the end of their pupillage.

We continue to offer mini-pupillages, so please apply for these via our form. The deadlines for mini-pupillage applications are the end of December and June each year. We only interview pupillage candidates who have completed, or been offered, a mini-pupillage in Chambers.

Note that mini-pupillages for the December applications cohort take place between March and July. As such, a large number of these early-year mini-pupillage dates fall after interview shortlists are determined for pupillage applications in the same year. You may wish to consider applying in June to ensure that you have completed a Twenty Essex mini-pupillage in advance of making a pupillage application in the winter, so that feedback from your mini-pupillage can be taken into account.

If you have any questions about pupillage or mini-pupillage do please email us on pupillage@twentyessex.com.
