Members provide English and international law advice on all maritime issues. These include everything from shipbuilding contracts and guarantees, ship sale and ship finance agreements, through to all manner of charterparty issues and bills of lading. With a commercial understanding of how the market works, members across all levels advise shipowners, charterers, P&I Clubs, shipyards, marine insurance underwriters, governments, State-owned enterprises and brokers.
Twenty Essex is made up of multidisciplinary barristers who recognise that there has been fundamental change in the nature of disputes and the demands for advice required by those in the shipping sector. Members act as sole counsel or, when dealing with more substantial matters, as part of larger teams. They are frequently instructed in very technical cases and many members possess expertise beyond the legal field.
